VCan helps grandmother secure new apartment after falling on hard times - Sunday, December 10, 2023

My name is Shelonda Harris and I am grateful to have received assistance from FBH Community’s VCan program. My two grandchildren, Ervin, 11, and Neveah, 12, and I were living in DeLand and fell on hard times. We initially reached out to the VCan helpline to see if we could get assistance with a few nights of hotel stay, not knowing where we would live after that.

With the help of the VCan staff, they not only provided us with the hotel stay, but they connected us to Halifax Urban Ministries who helped us relocate into a two-bedroom apartment in South Daytona.

The service we received from the VCan staff was incredible. They provided us with a nice, clean hotel for one week along with food that we could prepare in the hotel room. My grandchildren were so thankful to be in a safe place, with a roof over our heads. Having a safe place to sleep at night means so much.

We have started furnishing and decorating our new home. Our kind landlord gave my grandchildren new beds and a TV. I am adding some decorating touches with my favorite color, lavender. I am still in need of a dresser to keep my clothes in and still need a queen comforter set. This Christmas will be extra special for us.

I wish for my grandchildren to receive new games. I am thankful to FBH Community and Halifax Urban Ministries for helping us. It meant so much to have their support during such a difficult time in our lives.
