Audricka Johnson lives on fixed income and has often struggled to make ends meet. After facing several health challenges, including a mild stroke and a diagnosis of muscular dystrophy, she found herself unable to work. The health scares made her realize the importance of eating healthier, but the question was how she could afford it.
"I knew I had to stop eating processed foods that were worsening my condition and start eating healthier, but I didn’t know how I could afford it," Audricka shared. "After my stroke and multiple trips to the emergency room, I was diagnosed with muscular dystrophy. The scary diagnosis changed everything for me. I couldn't work anymore and was struggling to take care of myself and my daughter."
When Audricka's church shared an announcement about FBH Community's monthly food distributions, she knew she had to give it a try. The food pantry, which serves families in the 32114 ZIP code and other Volusia County residents, provides healthy food at no cost. For Audricka and her daughter, this was a lifeline.
"I now visit the pantry regularly and receive fresh produce, vegetables, eggs, rice, beans, chicken, and other nutritious foods that help me, and my daughter eat healthier," she explained. "The food assistance has been a game-changer for us, and it allows me to use more of my disability income for rent, which has helped us gain more housing stability. The food from the pantry is literally saving my life — I wouldn’t be able to stay healthy without the VCan’s help."
Audricka's daughter, Audriyanna Nelson, is 6 years old, very active, and has ADHD. She loves playing football and is also interested in cheerleading. "We’ll spend Christmas together, opening any gifts that she may receive," Audricka says.
Audriyanna’s holiday wish list includes clothes in sizes 10-12 and a black jacket or coat.
Audricka is deeply grateful for the care and support she has received from the FBH Community team and her church, GNZ.
"Without their help, I don’t know where we’d be today," she says. "Thank you for the food, for nourishing my body, and for uplifting my spirit."
