My name is Zion Carpenter, and I am a sophomore at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, studying spaceflight operations and systems engineering. From an early age I have always been interested in space exploration but lacked the resources/support to pursue it.
After joining the military, I realized that my strong work ethic could be harnessed to acquire resources, pursue studies, finance college and engage in research related to space exploration, all while involving others in the process. However, it was not easy accomplishing my goal into higher education.
In my journey in high school, I encountered numerous challenges, including my parents' divorce, navigating impoverished circumstances, managing a mental disability, and facing prejudices at school. Finding a supportive community that shared my interests proved consistently challenging throughout my academic pursuits. Despite these challenges, I maintained a strong academic record, achieving a 3.7 GPA in high school. Additionally, I actively participated in extracurricular activities such as sports, the National Honor Society, music, student government, and I completed the Army National Guard training.
After graduating from high school, I was soon accepted into Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University.
Getting to Embry Riddle was nonetheless nerve-wracking and challenging as I traveled across the country to attend. Settling into an apartment, juggling three to four jobs, applying for scholarships, and creating a GoFundMe to mitigate the potential burden of an astronomical amount of student debt added to the complexity.
During my pursuit of attending Embry Riddle, I also encountered some wonderful individuals within the FBH Community and its affiliate, Food Brings Hope. Furthermore, this journey taught me that hard work and determination can compensate for shortcomings, and there is always someone willing to lend a listening ear. I express my gratitude to the FBH Community for their kindness.
This year for Christmas, I would like a Game Boy Advance handheld system; men’s large top, polos; bottoms, cargo shorts, size 32 waist shorts, 36 length, black, khaki, green, purple, burgundy; adult skateboard-long board, helmet; and gift cards for ice cream shoppes.
