Change the Code helps 8th-grader improve scores - Friday, December 22, 2023

My name is Jean Wallace and I am in the eighth grade at Campbell Middle School. I joined the Change the Code morning tutoring program in October to help improve my grades in English Language Arts. I struggle with reading comprehension and with taking tests, even though I love to read.

I read a lot of fantasy books and graphic novels. My favorite books are "Treasure Island" and "Star Wars." In the fifth grade I started to write my own books and graphics novels. One of the graphic novels that I have written is called "Maria’s Life." It’s based on my life and is part truth and part made-up. I love writing because it makes my imagination soar! I like to talk about my culture in my books — I am Hispanic and Irish.

My favorite teacher is Dr. Moore; she teaches critical thinking and helps me understand how to do more of my work and helps to prepare me better for my other classes. Dr. Moore teaches me skills like when there is a difficult question, she helps me break it down so I can understand it better and be able to solve it. I also get to help other students in that class.

What I love most about my school is the friends that I have made and going to PE to play my favorite sport, which is basketball. I seriously love all the teachers who have helped me throughout my years at Campbell, it makes me sad to think that I will have to leave them to go to high school next year.

I live with my grandparents, and we like to do outdoor activities together like going fishing and camping. We fish in the St. John’s River and in ponds. I like living with my grandparents because they speak "old school" and then at school, we speak "new school." So, I can speak both ways mixed together and that makes me really adaptable.

When I grow up, I want to explore many areas. I would like to be a writer, engineer, computer technician or a mathematician. I learned about engineering in the sixth grade. I had a technology class and it taught me how to build a rocket. I really like STEM and doing science experiments. This holiday season I wish for learning workbooks to practice math and reading more, so I can be more comfortable with these subjects. I also would like to receive arts and crafts supplies because I am very creative!
